THE VISIT TO AGOMEDA

Few months ago, I paid a visit to Agomeda a part of Shai Odudoku District in the Greater Accra Region. Entering the town, I was dumbfounded,this part of Greater breaks the record. The uniqueness of this town was just beyond thoughts. The community looked so clean and free of filth. For a moment I kept wondering how they do it, where they keep their rubbish and how it started. Every corner was so clean I could sleep there for ages.

Visiting the basic schools, I was overwhelmed; students from the scratch are educated on personal hygiene and they practice it . This reflects in their homes and community as a whole. The future leaders as we know them to be are taught well and practically they apply what they are taught.

Irrespective of the challenges they face as a community to increase the awareness on the need for personal hygiene, traditional taps are created for students and the people as a whole to aid in the washing of hands and good hygiene and finally good sanitation.

Speaking to the Assembly man of Agomeda Mr. Dennis Nartey, he said every sanitation day is seriously observed in Agomeda. Natives of the town gather in their numbers at 6:00am and clean the entire community, by 8:00am they are done. This practice and dedication of the people has won the community awards in terms of sanitation on several occasions.

Looking at all these, I realized we all can. Ghana has a lot to provide and develop thus all the huge sums of money channeled into sanitation can be channeled into other sectors when we work on our attitude towards it; adopting Agomeda's sanitation attitude. This way the dream of Ghana beyond aid can be on its way to achievement. Ghana is blessed and we all must unite and know it’s our shared responsibility to do so.
